Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Review: A Blast from the Past

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a remake of the first two titles in the Advance Wars series, which were originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2001 and 2003.

The game features two campaigns that cover the events of Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, as well as a Versus mode where you can play with up to four players online or offline.

As a fan of the original games, I was excited to see how WayForward, the developer behind the remake, would bring the classic turn-based strategy gameplay to the modern era. I was not disappointed.

The game is a faithful and fun adaptation of the original games, with updated graphics, music, and features that make it accessible and enjoyable for both new and old players.

In this review, I will share my experience and opinion on the game, covering the following aspects:

  • Gameplay: How does the game play and what are the main mechanics and features?
  • Graphics: How does the game look and what are the differences between the original and the remake?
  • Sound: How does the game sound and what are the changes in the music and voice acting?
  • Content: How much content does the game offer and what are the modes and options available?
  • Verdict: What are the pros and cons of the game and is it worth buying?

Gameplay

The gameplay of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is simple to learn but hard to master.

You take the role of a Commanding Officer (CO) from one of the four factions in Cosmo Land: Orange Star, Blue Moon, Green Earth, and Gold Comet.

Each CO has their personality, strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities that affect the performance of their units and the outcome of the battles.

You control various land, air, and sea units, each with its movement range, attack range, and terrain interaction.

You have to use strategy and tactics to defeat the enemy forces, capture their properties, and achieve your objectives.

You also have to manage your resources, such as money, ammo, and fuel, and use them wisely to build new units, repair damaged ones, and replenish supplies.

The game is divided into two campaigns, each with multiple missions that follow a story.

The first campaign is Advance Wars, where you play as the Orange Star Nation, which is under attack by the neighboring Blue Moon.

The second campaign is Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, where you join forces with the other nations to stop the evil Black Hole Army from conquering Cosmo Land.

The game also has a Versus mode, where you can play with up to four players online or offline.

You can choose from different maps, settings, and rules, and customize your matches.

You can also create your maps using the Map Editor feature, and share them with other players.

The game is very fun and addictive, especially if you like strategy games.

The game offers a lot of challenge and replay value, as each mission and match can be different depending on your choices and actions.

The game also has a Tutorial mode and a Help menu that explains the basics and the advanced concepts of the game, making it easy for beginners to get started and for veterans to refresh their memory.

Advance Wars 1+2: Graphics

The graphics of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp are a major improvement from the original games, which had pixelated and simplistic graphics.

The game has a colorful and cartoony style, with 3D models and animations for the units and the environments.

The game also has a dynamic camera that zooms in and out depending on the action and a cinematic mode that shows the battles in more detail.

The game looks great on the Nintendo Switch, both on the TV and in the handheld mode.

The game runs smoothly and without any noticeable glitches or bugs.

The game also has a Retro mode, which lets you switch to the original graphics and sound of the Game Boy Advance games, for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

The graphics of the game are not realistic or detailed, but they are charming and fitting for the tone and the genre of the game.

The game has a lot of personality and humor, with expressive and quirky characters, and funny and witty dialogues.

The game also has a lot of variety and creativity, with different themes and settings for each mission and map, such as forests, deserts, snow, volcanoes, etc.

Advance Wars 1+2: Sound

The sound of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is also a big upgrade from the original games, which had limited and repetitive sound effects and music.

The game has a rich and diverse soundtrack, with remixed and original songs that match the mood and the atmosphere of the game.

The game also has voice acting, with each CO having their voice and accent, and saying different lines depending on the situation.

The sound of the game is very immersive and enjoyable and adds a lot of flavor and emotion to the game.

The game also has a Sound Test mode, where you can listen to the music and the voice clips of the game, and a Retro mode, where you can switch to the original sound and music of the Game Boy Advance games, for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Advance Wars 1+2: Content

The content of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is very generous and satisfying, as it includes two full games in one package, plus some extra features and options.

The game has over 100 missions in the two campaigns, plus over 50 maps in the Versus mode, and unlimited possibilities in the Map Editor mode.

The game also has a lot of unlockables and secrets, such as new COs, new maps, new modes, and new music.

The game has a lot of replay value, as each mission and match can be different depending on your choices and actions.

The game also has a ranking system, where you can earn medals and stars based on your performance and achievements.

The game also has a Gallery mode, where you can view the artwork and the information of the game, and a Records mode, where you can view your statistics and your progress.

The game is very worth the price, as it offers a lot of content and quality for a reasonable cost.

The game is also very accessible and enjoyable, as it can be played by anyone, regardless of age, gender, or skill level.

The game is also very flexible and customizable, as it can be played in different ways, depending on your preference and style.
